In 1899, Will L. Thompson, donated 100 acres of land to the city of East Liverpool, Ohio for a community park.
Mr. Thompson is best known for being author and composer of “Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling”, “Gathering Shells By The Seashore”, and many other religious hymns and popular songs published throughout the world.
Thompson Park offers many recreational resources, such as, a football field, baseball field, basketball court, tennis courts, a swimming pool, playgrounds, picnic pavilions, an outdoor amphitheater, and one of the biggest disc golf courses in the state of Ohio with 27 holes.
Thompson Park is home to many species of hardwood trees and wildflowers. The beautiful flower gardens and displays throughout the park are maintained by the East Liverpool Calcutta Area Garden Club.
Staying healthy is one of Thompson Park’s mottos. Many people of all ages, utilize the top and lower circles of the park for walking, bicycling, and jogging.
Thompson Park is a great place for hosting community events, as well as, family reunions, birthday parties, picnics, and even weddings.
